Orlando Unplugged: October 2026 News & Updates
September was another busy month across Orlando and Central Florida, with new businesses opening, major projects moving forward, transportation changes, and plenty of events giving locals something new to see and experience. From autonomous vehicles being tested in Lake Nona and changes coming to downtown parking to the return of seasonal favorites, new dining and entertainment options, and developments that could have a lasting impact on the region, there was no shortage of local news to follow. Here’s a look at some of the stories that stood out across Orlando and Central Florida going into October 2026.
Dazzling Nights Returns to Leu Gardens with a 50-Foot Snowman
The holiday season is already making its way to Orlando, with tickets now on sale for Dazzling Nights at Harry P. Leu Gardens. Returning November 20th through January 3rd, the mile-long nighttime experience will transform the 50-acre gardens with new light installations, live performances, and interactive experiences, including a 50-foot illuminated snowman in the Rose Garden, a 60-foot tunnel of glowing poinsettias, reflective disco balls, choreographed Christmas trees, glowing forest creatures, and towering yetis. This year also introduces the Yeti Mine Adventure for children, while DriftLands and the Twinkle Market return with interactive entertainment, food, drinks, shopping, and additional light displays. Timed entry begins at 5:30PM, with tickets starting at $35 for adults.
Lake Nona Residents Can Now Ride in Autonomous Volkswagen ID. Buzz Vehicles
Autonomous transportation has moved into its next testing phase in Lake Nona, where invited residents can now take rides in self-driving Volkswagen ID. Buzz vehicles operated through a partnership between MOIA America and Beep. The launch marks MOIA America’s first passenger operations in the United States and expands ongoing autonomous mobility testing in Central Florida to include real riders. Trips can be requested through the Beep app, with passengers using designated pickup and drop-off locations along three planned routes throughout Lake Nona. Trained human operators remain onboard during this phase while riders provide feedback about their experience. The program is part of a broader effort to test how shared autonomous vehicles could eventually connect with existing transportation networks and provide on-demand mobility in growing communities.
Orlando’s Paid Parking System Goes Fully Digital October 1st
Orlando is making a major change to the way drivers pay for parking, with the city retiring roughly 1,000 physical parking meters and moving to a fully digital system beginning October 1st. Drivers will be able to pay by mobile app, text message, or phone, but cash payments at traditional meters will no longer be available. The change also comes with higher parking rates and longer enforcement hours, with rates increasing from $1 per hour to $2 for the first two hours, followed by additional hourly increases and a six-hour maximum at metered spaces. Enforcement will run from 8AM to 8PM, while Sundays and city-observed holidays remain free. The modernization follows a phased rollout that began earlier this summer in SoDo and South Eola.
Enzian Theater Brings 13 Films and 13 Halloween Cocktails to Orlando
Halloween is getting the full cinematic treatment at Enzian Theater this October, with the return of its annual 13+ Films of Halloween series and a matching menu of 13 themed cocktails at Eden Bar. The lineup runs from October 3rd through Halloween and includes horror favorites and cult classics such as Possession, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, Resident Evil, Nosferatu, Halloween II, Evil Dead 2, The Faculty, Corpse Bride, and more. One of the highlights comes October 25th, when a screening of F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu will feature a new live score performed by the Fernwood String Quartet. Enzian is also bringing back its Halloween punch card, giving guests a chance to earn rewards by attending screenings and ordering featured cocktails throughout the month.
VetteFest Returns to Old Town Kissimmee for Its 21st Year
Classic cars will take center stage at Old Town Kissimmee on October 3rd when VetteFest returns for its 21st annual celebration. The event will bring vintage and modern Corvettes together from 10AM to 3PM, with vehicles arriving for registration and display before the afternoon car cruise begins at 3PM. For Central Florida car enthusiasts, the event offers a chance to see a wide range of America’s most recognizable sports cars while enjoying Old Town’s shops, restaurants, entertainment, and attractions along U.S. 192. The annual gathering is part of the larger lineup of car shows and community events that have helped make Old Town a longtime destination in the Kissimmee area.
SunRail Adds Late-Night Service for Hamilton Performances in Orlando
Getting home from a weeknight performance of Hamilton became a little easier for Central Florida theatergoers this fall, with SunRail adding a special 11PM northbound train from Church Street Station during the musical’s Orlando run. The additional service operated on weeknights from September 29th through October 16th, providing another transportation option for audiences attending performances at the Walt Disney Theater at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Church Street Station is about a five-minute walk from the theater, making the service particularly convenient for people looking to take SunRail instead of driving downtown. The additional train was available only northbound and did not operate for weekend performances, so riders needed to check the regular schedule for other trips.
Asian Lantern Festival Returns to Central Florida Zoo for the Holidays
The Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens is bringing back its Asian Lantern Festival: Into the Wild for another holiday season, with the 2026 event running on select nights from November 13th through January 17th, 2027. Now in its seventh year, the festival will feature larger-than-life handcrafted lanterns illuminated by more than 10,000 LED lights along a three-quarter-mile route through the Zoo. This year’s displays explore themes including space, North American wildlife, the polar regions, and traditional Chinese lanterns. The festival will also include special Sensory Nights on December 1st and January 12th, along with adults-only evenings on December 10th and January 5th. Tickets for individual and family admission go on sale October 1st, with the annual event continuing to draw more than 100,000 visitors to Central Florida.
Ájini Brings African Art, Fashion, and Design to Ivanhoe Village
A new storefront is adding an international design perspective to Orlando’s Ivanhoe Village. Ájini, an African atelier focused on clothing, art, and craftsmanship, is now open at 1221 N. Orange Avenue in Swanson’s Ivanhoe Row. The shop curates designers and artists whose work combines ancestral techniques with contemporary design, bringing a selection of African fashion and artwork to the neighborhood. Ájini occupies the space created when longtime Ivanhoe Row neighbor Tim’s Wine Market consolidated into a smaller footprint earlier this year. The arrival is part of a wave of new activity along Orange Avenue, with Rye Row by Olde Hearth also recently opening nearby with breads, pastries, cookies, and coffee.
Orange County Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Local Exhibits and Community Events
Orange County marked Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th through October 15th with a series of events, recognitions, and public exhibits celebrating the contributions and experiences of the county’s Hispanic community. The Hispanic Heritage Network of Orange County and Orange County Government organized this year’s celebration around the theme “Unidos, Somos Más,” or “Together, We Are More.” The month-long program included awards recognizing local leaders, students, athletes, and community advocates, along with a Hispanic Heritage Month exhibit at the Orange County Administration Center through October 22nd. A second exhibit at Gallery MCO on the third floor of Orlando International Airport will remain on display through November 9th. Both exhibitions are free and open to the public.
Brightline Restructures Finances While Orlando Train Service Continues
Brightline’s parent companies entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September as part of a financial restructuring that includes $490 million in new long-term financing, but the company’s passenger trains between Orlando and South Florida continue operating. Brightline Trains Florida LLC, the entity responsible for passenger service, is not included in the bankruptcy proceedings, and the company says the restructuring is not expected to affect day-to-day operations. The development comes as Brightline continues planning for its Central Florida expansion, including a proposed Cocoa station and a future extension toward Tampa. In August, the Federal Railroad Administration awarded approximately $57.5 million to advance the Cocoa Multimodal Station and Rail Project into final design and construction, with the station currently expected to open in 2030.
P.F. Chang’s Introduces New Seasonal Menu in Orlando
P.F. Chang’s is bringing a fall-inspired menu to participating Orlando locations with its limited-time Autumn in Kyoto experience, available through November 3rd. The seasonal lineup puts a new spin on familiar dishes with options including duck wings tossed in teriyaki sauce, duck fried rice, and Wagyu egg rolls filled with beef, vegetables, garlic, ginger, and black pepper. The menu also includes returning favorites such as the Sushi Boat, along with new cocktails including the Matcha Martini made with YOSHI Matcha Liqueur and the Kyoto Cabin featuring bourbon, black tea, maple, and lemon. The restaurant is also continuing its Spirit of Strength campaign benefiting Starlight Children’s Foundation, giving guests opportunities to contribute through check rounding or the purchase of a limited-edition plush.
Orlando Science Center Brings Cosmic Concerts Back This Fall
Orlando Science Center is bringing its Cosmic Concerts laser-light series back for four additional nights through December following a popular summer run. The fall lineup features a mix of classic rock, pop, metal, and holiday music paired with immersive laser effects inside the Science Center’s dome. The September 12th schedule included ’80s and ’90s hits, Pink Floyd’s The Wall, and U2, followed by Fright Night, Laser Zeppelin, and Rocket Man on October 10th. November brings Laser Vinyl, Rush 2112, and Metallica, while December 12 closes the series with Laser Holidays, Grateful Dead, and Taylor Swift. Tickets are $15 per show, with concessions, beer, and wine available during the performances. The concerts are recommended for guests ages 12 and older.
Orlando’s 407 Connect Program Helps 169 People Move Into Permanent Housing
Orlando’s 407 Connect program reached an important milestone after helping 169 people transition into permanent housing during its first year. Launched in August 2025 as a three-year pilot, the $3 million program uses two retrofitted Greyhound buses to provide overnight shelter, case management, rental assistance, move-in support, and other services designed to help people experiencing homelessness move toward stable housing. The buses contain 42 individual sleeping areas with charging outlets, storage, and privacy curtains and are operated in partnership with the Christian Service Center. Since launching, the program has provided overnight shelter and other support to 260 people, including men, women, and children. The city established the program with a goal of helping approximately 400 people find permanent housing over three years.
Orlando Named America’s No. 1 City for Coffee Lovers in 2026
Orlando earned the number 1 spot in WalletHub’s 2026 ranking of the best U.S. cities for coffee lovers, moving up from number 2 in 2025. The ranking looked at the 100 largest U.S. cities across 12 metrics, with coffee-shop availability and affordability among the most heavily weighted factors. Orlando ranked third nationally for coffee shops, coffee houses, and cafés per capita, first for coffee and tea shops offering free Wi-Fi per capita, and tied for first in doughnut shops per capita. The ranking applies to the city of Orlando itself rather than the broader metro area, so coffee businesses in communities such as Winter Park, Winter Garden, and Maitland were not included. While the methodology measures coffee-shop availability and related factors, it does not account for local ownership or the role independent cafés play in Orlando neighborhoods.
Orange County Moves Toward a Temporary Data Center Development Moratorium
Orange County commissioners moved forward in September with plans to consider a temporary moratorium on new data center development while county staff study potential impacts and develop local regulations. Commissioners reached a consensus on a possible six- to 18-month pause, although a formal ordinance or resolution still requires a future vote. The discussion comes as large-scale data centers, particularly facilities with electrical loads of 50 megawatts or more, become a growing development issue in communities across the country. Orange County currently does not specifically address data centers in its zoning regulations or county code. Commissioners and residents have raised questions about potential effects involving water use, electricity demand, noise, land use, and infrastructure, while county staff noted that data centers vary significantly in size and impact. A formal vote on the proposed moratorium was expected to follow later in the year.
Orlando Mural Festival Adds New Public Art Across Downtown
Downtown Orlando became a canvas for artists from Central Florida and beyond as the Orlando Mural Festival returned for its third year in September. Presented by the Downtown Arts District and CityArts, the free festival brought approximately 15 local, national, and international muralists to locations throughout Downtown Orlando and Thornton Park, where visitors could watch large-scale works take shape in real time. The September 19th Art Party at CityArts and surrounding venues featured live mural painting, artists, vendors, music, food, and other creative experiences. This year’s festival expanded its footprint with participation from the Thornton Park District and City District. Since launching in 2024, Orlando Mural Festival has grown into a major downtown public-art event, with more than 8,000 attendees reported in 2025.
Rolling Loud Announces 2027 Return to Orlando
Rolling Loud is officially returning to Orlando in 2027, with the next edition scheduled for May 7th through May 9th at Camping World Stadium. Tickets went on sale in September, with three-day passes starting at $249 and payment plans available, although the 2027 artist lineup had not yet been announced at the time tickets became available. The festival made its Orlando debut earlier in 2026 after moving away from its longtime Miami home, bringing three days of performances to Camping World Stadium and additional RL Week events throughout the city. The festival’s return also extends beyond the stadium, with organizers previously incorporating downtown parties and after-hours events into the Orlando experience. For 2027, the festival will once again make Central Florida one of Rolling Loud’s major destinations.
Brightline Adds More Flexible Fare Options for Orlando Travelers
Brightline expanded its fare options for passengers traveling to or from Orlando, adding a new FLEX option designed for travelers who want greater flexibility when plans change. FLEX fares allow passengers in either SMART or PREMIUM service to cancel for a refund to their original form of payment or modify their trip without a change fee, subject to fare differences and applicable conditions. Brightline also continues to offer SELECT fares with more limited modification options and SAVER fares as its lowest-priced SMART option. FLEX passengers receive additional luggage allowances and complimentary one-way airport transfer options at select South Florida stations. The new fare structure gives Orlando travelers more choices based on price, flexibility, and travel needs while keeping the onboard experience associated with each service level unchanged.
A Rare Harry Merritt Home Comes to Market in Oviedo
A piece of Central Florida architectural history is hitting the market for the first time. This 1976 Oviedo home was designed by noted Florida architect Harry Merritt Jr., whose work is known for Ocala block construction, expansive windows and designs that connect closely with the surrounding landscape. The two-bedroom, two-bath home at 291 Maple Court has remained with the original family and features a large enclosed courtyard and views of its established, old-Florida setting. Listed at $675,000, the property offers a rare look at the kind of mid-century modern architecture that helped shape parts of Central Florida.
ICEBAR Orlando Gets Into the Halloween Spirit
Halloween is taking over International Drive, and ICEBAR Orlando is bringing a cocktail menu to match. Its annual “Deadly Sips” lineup features five Halloween-inspired drinks with everything from pumpkin spice and smoke bubbles to bubbling dry ice and syringe shots. The seasonal programming also includes a spooky-themed mixology class on October 18th and a Halloween weekend celebration from October 30th through November 1st, complete with DJs, costume contests and themed cocktails. For anyone looking for something a little different to do around Orlando this fall, ICEBAR is adding another option to the city's packed Halloween calendar.
Orlandoans Are Finding New Ways to Make Friends
Making new friends as an adult can be harder than it sounds, and one recent Orlando event offered a creative way to break the ice. More than 50 people picked up a vintage-style phone at the Friend Line during a Wellness Haus event at Hotel Beauden, recording messages about the kinds of connections they were hoping to make. The idea came from Harvi, a forthcoming social concierge app focused on connecting people based on interests, schedules and life stages. With more than 100 people attending the event, the response highlights something easy to overlook in a growing city: sometimes people simply need an easy reason to meet someone new.
Frontier Adds Nonstop Flights From Orlando to Colombia
Travel between Central Florida and Colombia is about to get easier, with Frontier Airlines announcing new nonstop service from Orlando International Airport to Bogotá, Cartagena and Medellín beginning in December. The expansion marks Frontier's first service to South America and gives Orlando travelers three new international options from MCO. The routes also add another connection between Central Florida and one of the region's important international communities, while giving travelers more choices for reaching Colombia without a connection.
Downtown Orlando’s Grand Bohemian Becomes Hotel Beauden
A familiar Downtown Orlando landmark is entering a new chapter. The former Grand Bohemian Orlando is now Hotel Beauden, an Autograph Collection hotel with a refreshed identity designed around Orlando's creative and civic character. Along with the new name comes Libra, the hotel's new signature restaurant and bar, replacing The Boheme and Bosendorfer Lounge with a menu influenced by Hispanic, Floridian and Asian flavors. The property has also introduced updated public spaces, a new lobby mural and additional programming planned for later this fall, while continuing to serve as a gathering place near Lake Eola, Church Street, Kia Center and the Dr. Phillips Center.
Orlando Lands Three More Years of High-Level College Basketball
Downtown Orlando is adding another major sporting event to its calendar. The Hall of Fame Series will come to Kia Center for three consecutive years beginning December 12th, 2026, bringing high-profile college basketball matchups to the city through 2028. The inaugural event will feature Florida taking on Georgia Tech and Florida Atlantic University facing VCU in a doubleheader. Beyond giving local fans another major sporting event to attend, the series is expected to draw visitors from across the country and add another nationally recognized event to Orlando's growing sports calendar.
