Diana Galante, the skilled art conservator leading the restoration, embarked on a unique exploration within the opened acrylic display case. Dusting away the remnants of time and meticulously addressing paint imperfections, Galante breathed new vitality into this cherished artwork. Reflecting on the project, she shared her enthusiasm, stating, "Duane Hanson’s artworks are not just accessible; they are technically masterful. Preserving such artwork for the future is both a responsibility and a rare joy."
Commissioned in October 1985, "The Traveler" remains a beacon, serving as a distinctive design element for wayfinding in the bustling airport. Cloaked in blue shorts, a coral top, and running shoes, the hyperrealistic sculpture has long teased viewers with the perennial question, "Is he real?" Passersby watch intently, half-expecting a subtle movement that never comes. The sculpture's unveiling, attended by the model who posed for it – a neighbor of Hanson’s – became an unforgettable moment, adding a touch of unexpected drama.
Originally positioned near a Main Terminal bar without a covering, "The Traveler" bore witness to refurbishments over the years due to interactions from a diverse array of global passengers. Coin tosses for good luck and varied expressions of wonder prompted several adjustments. Eventually encased in acrylic at its current location, the sculpture maintains its ability to delight and intrigue, a silent storyteller in the transient airport environment.
Duane Hanson (1925-1996), celebrated for his international acclaim, was a sculptor based in South Florida known for hyperrealistic portrayals of working-class figures. Using mediums such as polyester resin, Bondo, bronze, or fiberglass, Hanson captured the essence of everyday people, painting figures with meticulous attention to imperfections and the nuances of genuine skin.
Hanson's art, far beyond mere illusion, encapsulates the human experience with its fatigue, frustration, and moments of rejection. In his words, "My art is not about fooling people. It’s the human attitudes I’m after – fatigue, a bit of frustration, rejection. To me, there is a kind of beauty in all this."
"The Traveler" stands as a testament to Duane Hanson's artistry and continues to be a captivating piece at Orlando International Airport. Its recent restoration is not just a renewal but an awakening – an invitation for travelers to engage with the profound beauty embedded within the silent narratives of the human experience.
