Exploring Orlando's Project DTO 2.0
Orlando's downtown core is undergoing a dramatic transformation, and Project DTO 2.0 is at the heart of this change. Spearheaded by Mayor Buddy Dyer, this ambitious initiative aims to create a vibrant, accessible, and inclusive downtown that reflects the needs of modern urban living.

In his annual State of Downtown address, Mayor Dyer outlined a visionary plan that includes three "Big Ideas" aimed at reshaping the future of Downtown Orlando: making it easy to get around, creating an iconic urban park, and developing a neighborhood for everyone.
Downtown is Easy to Get Around
One of the key pillars of Project DTO 2.0 is the transformation of Downtown Orlando into a more navigable and interconnected urban environment. With a focus on modernizing the city's transit infrastructure, the plan aims to improve streets, sidewalks, bike lanes, and public transportation systems to better serve residents, businesses, and visitors.
Magnolia Avenue is a focal point in this effort. It will be redesigned to feature extended sidewalks, on-street parking, and a more expansive public realm. By doing so, it will become a social hub, connecting cultural and entertainment destinations. Enhancements to Orange Avenue and Rosalind Avenue will also foster two-way traffic, optimizing streets for curbside dining and events, making Downtown Orlando a true “18-hour city.”
Further emphasizing accessibility, the new Ride DTO service will offer eco-friendly, on-demand rides throughout Downtown for just one dollar. This initiative is designed to make moving through the downtown core easier than ever, encouraging both locals and visitors to explore everything the area has to offer.
Downtown as an Iconic Park
In addition to enhancing transportation, Project DTO 2.0 aims to transform Downtown Orlando into an iconic urban park. This vision will see the development of a network of creatively designed, smaller parks that will form a vibrant green space in the heart of the city.
One of the most exciting projects under this umbrella is the revitalization of Lake Lucerne, where new jogging paths, fitness equipment, and event spaces will be introduced alongside picturesque floating flower arrangements. The plan also includes a massive redevelopment under the I-4 overpass, dubbed The Canopy. Similar to New York’s High Line, this space will become a one-of-a-kind urban oasis, offering leisure activities and gathering spaces that make use of previously underutilized areas.
Lake Eola, already a cherished park, is slated for further expansion, adding new features like upgraded lighting, shade trees, and larger walkways, ensuring it remains a beloved destination for decades to come.
A Neighborhood for Everyone
The final Big Idea focuses on making Downtown Orlando a neighborhood for all, ensuring the area offers diverse housing options, inclusive social spaces, and opportunities for everyone to thrive. The development of mixed-use projects like Westcourt — which will feature residential units, a hotel, a dog park, and an entertainment venue — is central to this vision. Managed by Live Nation, the venue will boast a 3,500-seat entertainment space, adding to Downtown’s growing reputation as a hotspot for culture and events.
Project DTO 2.0 also highlights the city's commitment to supporting local businesses and improving the food scene. The Good Salt Restaurant Group, known for its popular restaurants, is expanding its presence downtown with the upcoming opening of Sparrow, further contributing to Downtown’s culinary renaissance.
To ensure that Downtown is accessible to all residents, regardless of income level, the city has launched several affordable housing initiatives. These include down-payment assistance programs and the creation of new single-family homes. Through the Accelerate Orlando initiative, the city is also addressing homelessness, with the goal of reducing the number of unsheltered residents by 50% by 2027.
A Vision of Inclusivity and Innovation
As Orlando looks to the future, Project DTO 2.0 sets the stage for Downtown to evolve into a modern, inclusive urban center. The three Big Ideas—making downtown easy to navigate, creating iconic park spaces, and developing a neighborhood for all—are designed to enhance the quality of life for everyone who lives, works, and visits the area.
From cutting-edge transit solutions like Ride DTO to the development of creative park spaces like The Canopy, and the transformation of major streets into lively social hubs, Orlando is committed to building a downtown that is both innovative and accessible.
As this vision takes shape, Downtown Orlando is well on its way to becoming a truly iconic destination where people from all walks of life can thrive, connect, and enjoy everything the city has to offer.
